(11) Nubian wrestling

Wrestling is known locally as "the struggle" and it is one of the most important and popular sports for the people of the Nuba Mountains, in addition to being a folk heritage and an original social activity in the region. Their practice is linked to specific rituals, most of which are related to life cycle events. Nubian wrestling is similar to Japanese wrestling "sumo", although it differs in some details. It relies on lightness, agility, deceit, and uses hands without resorting to violence, as each opponent seeks to knock the other down to the ground in order for him to prevail. Some wrestlers boast that their bodies never touch the ground. Our correspondent in Sudan, Islam Abdel-Rahman, visited the Nuba Mountains region and from there, and provided us with the following reportage.
